Replacing a roof is one of the bigger projects a homeowner takes on. Knowing what happens and when makes the whole process feel much easier. Here is what homeowners in Boise, Meridian and Nampa can expect when we replace a roof.

Before the work begins

Every job starts with a close look at your roof. We check the shingles, flashing, vents and attic, then explain what we found and what the new roof will include. This is a good time to ask questions about materials, colors and ventilation.

How to prepare your home

A little preparation helps the day go smoothly.

  • Move vehicles out of the garage and driveway so there is room for materials and a dumpster.
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves on walls, since vibration from the roof can shake them loose.
  • Cover items stored in the attic with old sheets or tarps to catch dust.
  • Move patio furniture, grills and potted plants away from the house.
  • Plan to keep pets and kids indoors or away from the work area. Roofing is noisy, and debris falls during tear-off.
  • Let your neighbors know about the project as a courtesy.

The tear-off

The old shingles, underlayment and worn flashing come off down to the roof decking. We protect landscaping and siding as best we can while debris goes into a dumpster. This is the loudest part of the job.

Inspecting and repairing the decking

With the roof stripped, the wood decking is exposed. We check it for rot, soft spots or water damage. Any damaged boards are replaced so the new roof has a solid base. This is one of the biggest advantages of a full replacement: problems hidden under old shingles finally get addressed.

Installing the new roof

The new roof goes on in layers, each with a job to do:

  1. Drip edge along the roof edges to guide water into the gutters.
  2. Waterproof underlayment at the eaves and valleys, where ice dams and heavy water flow are most likely.
  3. Underlayment across the rest of the roof deck.
  4. New flashing around chimneys, walls, skylights and vents.
  5. Shingles, installed from the bottom edge up.
  6. Ridge caps and ventilation to help your attic breathe.

Cleanup and final walkthrough

When the roof is finished, we clean up debris and sweep the yard and driveway with magnets to catch stray nails. Then we walk through the finished work with you and answer any questions.

How long a replacement takes depends on the size and shape of the roof, the amount of decking repair needed and the weather. We keep you informed from start to finish, so you always know where things stand.
